Welcome to Women’s Wellness Wednesday's with Melissa, brought to you by Northwest Medical Center.
All this month were talking about heart disease and the contributing factors. Dr. Greg Koshkarian, why does diabetes put a person at risk for a heart attack?
Diabetes we think of in terms of high sugars, but itís actually a widespread abnormality of our metabolism, where high sugars is just one of the components. High sugar by itself has effects on the body that makes it more likely to develop heart disease, So high insulin levels by itself isnít a good thing. People with diabetes tend to have a condition called metabolic syndrome. Which is a combination of weight, having certain abnormalities of the cholesterol, having high blood pressure and all of those things contribute to it.
